Holiday Potluck and Gift Giving that Inspires

Giving during the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful. In this article I give you a way to save stress from that holiday cooking and to buy gifts that give back. You can thank me later. I'm Jen and I'm a life coach.

Stress-Free Holiday cooking

Instead of hosting a holiday meal where you are responsible for everything, have a potluck. Guess what, holiday meals don’t have to be traditional. You could go all the way to the deep end and have a surprise potluck. This kind of potluck is one where you have no idea of what you’re eating. How fun! Cooking is not only therapeutic, but a potluck is an excuse to have fun with friends and family. If one of your friends or family wants something traditional – perfect – they can bring it.

Now when I refer to cooking, I'm talking about something enjoyable and manageable. I am not talking about cooking a seventeen-course meal that is stressful. That's where the fun of the potluck comes in because everyone makes something. I could just kiss the inventor of the potluck. It's just more of a comfortable setting where the host of the potluck isn't responsible for everything. Friends and family enjoy contributing and they get to contribute by bringing their own dish. It's a win-win for everyone - fun, less stress, and everyone chips in. If you are one of those people like I used to be that must be in control of everything and everything must be perfect - it is exhausting, stressful on others, and cut it out. Right now!

Kevon Paynter recently talked about the power of a potluck in Yes! magazine. What I love about Kevon's article is that he's talking about a woman who has a potluck every Friday. Imagine that! Having a chance to converse in a less stressed environment with friends and loved ones once a week. My twist on this is that the potluck be at a different house every week. This way more than one person is the host which means not having to have a clean-for-guests house every week.

Kevon also points out how potlucks can be a way to bring together differing beliefs and cultures. This is so important, especially now, when it seems like every day someone is hurting another with words or weapons because of differing beliefs or cultures. In Christina Aguilera’s song, Change, she sings "we're all the same when everybody's breathing."

Give by giving back

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give
— Winston Churchill

This quote by Mr. Churchill is inspiring. It makes me think of how I use my gifts to serve and how I can serve on an even bigger scale. It’s the holidays and it’s the season of giving. How about not only giving inspirational gifts, but buying these gifts from those who inspire? Not sure what I’m talking about? Go to the 2017 Good Gift Guide from Bittersweet. I knew of some of these inspirational finds, but wow was my mind blown! There are so many options – I can’t possibly list them all here. The gifts all support a good cause in some way. I don’t know about you, but I love picking out the perfect gift and knowing the gift also supports others in need is just the icing on the cake.

Happy cooking and gifting from your happiness life coach!

Much love,
